What is NIMR?
NIMR stands for the National institute for Medical Research. It is a governmental organisation under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the United Republic of Tanzania with the mandate of carrying out, controlling, coordinating, registration, monitoring, evaluation and promoting of health research in Tanzania (www.nimr.or.tz)

Where is NIMR located?
NIMR headquarters are in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It has 5 Research Centres (Amani, Tanga, Mwanza, Tabora and Muhimbili) and 4 stations (Amani Hill, Gonja, Tukuyu and Haydom)

What is NIMR Tanga Centre?
NIMR Tanga Centre is one of the centres of NIMR. It is located in Tanga City adjacent to Bombo Regional Hospital. It was formerly known as Bombo Field Station under Amani Centre dealing with lymphatic filariasis. It became a centre after the transfer of some activities from Amani Centre to Tanga in September 2005.

What is AMBRELA?
AMBRELA stands for Amani Biomedical Research Laboratory. It is a new state of the art laboratory which being utilised for different biomedical and clinical research.

What type of research does Tanga Centre do?
Tanga Centre conducts different studies with strong bias to clinical research in infectious diseases of public health importance according the National priorities and strategic plan of NIMR.

What priority areas of research are conducted at NIMR Tanga Centre?
For long a time, Tanga Centre (initially as Amani Centre and after shifting to Tanga) has been working on Malaria and lymphatic filariasis. But the Centre has currently expanded its activities and conducts studies on HIV/AIDS, plagues and Tuberculosis.

Who are employed by Tanga Centre?
Two types of staff are employed and work at Tanga Centre. They include research scientists, technicians and support staff employed by NIMR and staff employed by different projects on contract terms.

How can I join and work for Tanga Centre?
This can be through permanent employment by NIMR or through a vacancy available in any of the projects currently undertaken by Tanga Centre
Who can work with Tanga Centre?
Different local, regional and international institutions or individuals can work with Tanga Centre after a signing an official agreement.

How can I collaborate with Tanga Centre?
Collaboration can established between Tanga Centre and any other institution to work together on a short or long time as stated in a collaboration agreement or a memorandum of understanding.

Are students accepted at Tanga Centre?
Students are allowed to work at Tanga Centre either on short practical training or long time training such as Masters or PhD research. Any interested person should contact the office of Centre Director for more information

Does the Tanga Centre have any affiliation with Universities or other teaching institutions, locally and abroad?
Tanga Centre collaborates with local and foreign Universities/Institution (see under links and collaborators)

Do I Need to Pay Bench Fee when Working with NIMR Tanga Centre or Upon Using Lab Equipment
?
Yes, there is a bench fees for using the laboratory and fee for other resources. The rates can be obtained from the office of laboratory Manager.

Does the Centre Offer Consultation Services?
The Centre offers consultancy in different aspects of medical research and practice. For more information contact the office of Centre director.

Does the Tanga Centre collaborate with Local Hospital that is Located Nearby?
Tanga Centre collaborates with Bombo Regional Hospital. Muheza District Designated Hospital, Korogwe District Hospital and Bugando Medical Centre.

How do I reach NIMR Tanga and AMBRELA?
By road from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Central Tanzania. Tanga can also be reached by air. There is a local charter plane which operates between Tanga, Pemba, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam once daily
