NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH
TANGA CENTRE, TANGA, TANZANIA

Ongoing Research Activities:

  1. Malaria and immunity in north-eastern Tanzania. ( PI: Thor Theander; Funded by ENRECA/DANIDA, 2005 - 2008)
  1. Establishment and strengthening of sites for malaria vaccine trials in Korogwe District, Tanga region, north-eastern Tanzania. (PI: MM Lemnge; Funded by AMANET).
  1. Backup with Combivir (AZT/3TC) or single dose Truvada (FTC/TDF) in order to avoid Non Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NNRTI) resistance after single dose Nevirapine for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). (Local PI: CI Mandara; Funded by CISU)
  1. A Phase IIb randomized, double-blind, controlled study of the efficacy against episodes of clinical malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum infection of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals' candidate vaccine RTS,S/AS01E, administered IM according to a 0, 1, 2-month vaccination schedule in children aged 5 months to 17 months living in Tanzania and Kenya. (PI: Lorenz S and JPA Lusingu; Funded by MVI/GSK/MCTA)
  1. A multi-centre open label randomised comparison of injectable Artesunate and quinine in patients with severe falciparum malaria in Africa. Synonym: The A frica Qu inine versus Artesunate in Severe Malaria Trial (AQUAMAT). ( PI: Lorenz S and S. Gesase; Funded by Wellcome Trust, Bangkok, Thailand).
  1. Intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in infants in an area with high resistance to sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine: An evaluation of short and long-acting antimalarial drugs. (PI: D. Chandramohan; Funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Gates Malaria Partnership).
  1. Efficacy of Sulphadoxine/Pyrimethamine and chlorproguanil/dapsone in 6-59 month old children with uncomplicated malaria and how it relates to efficacy of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Malaria in Infants. A study linked to Kili-IPTi study. (PI: Gesase; Funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Gates Malaria Partnership)
  1. High performance liquid chromatographic methods development for analyses of antimalarials in biological fluids at the Amani Biomedical Research Laboratory, Tanga, Tanzania (PI: MM Lemnge; Funded by The Gates Malaria Partnership/Director’s Initiative Fund).
  1. MalariaGEN Consortial Project 2: Multi-centre study of immune gene polymorphisms that determine antibody production to malaria antigens (NIMR PI: MM Lemnge; Funded by the University of Oxford).
  1. Human monoclonal antibodies as tools for malaria research and therapy (Acronym: HUMALMAB). (PI: JPA Lusingu; Funded by the European Union).
  1. A double blind, randomized, controlled, dose escalation phase Ib field trial in 12 to 24 month old children in Korogwe , Tanzania to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the Plasmodium falciparum Merozoite Surface Protein-3 Long synthetic peptide (MSP 3) adjuvanted in aluminium hydroxide versus Hepatitis B vaccine ( PI: John Lusingu; Funded by AMANET).
  1. Expression of variant surface antigens in children and mothers with different malaria syndromes in north-eastern Tanzania (PI: JPA Lusingu; Funded by The Gates Malaria Partnership re-entry grant).
  1. Epidemiology of opportunistic Infections, Adverse drug events and clinical response of patients on ARV treatment in Tanga region. (PI: W.H. Makunde; Funded by NIMR/CDC Co-Agreement)
  1. Cost effectiveness assessment of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria in infants (IPTi) in areas of high and low to moderate malaria transmission. (PI: G Hutton; Funded by BMGF).
  1. Assessment of acceptability of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria in infants(IPTi) in areas of high and low to moderate malaria transmission. (PI: R Pool; Funded by BMGF).

  2. Targeting on the value of “Wolbachia endobacteria” as a novel feasible anti-filarial chemotherapy to prevent/reduce/clear clinical disease and interrupt transmission in Lymphatic filariasis endemic communities in Tanzania. (It’s a post-doctoral research activity by doctor W.H Makunde; Funded by VW German).
